What it is
Ginkgo biloba is an extract from one of the oldest living tree species, and one of the most-studied botanicals for cerebral blood flow and age-related memory support.
How it's associated with cognition
Ginkgo is studied primarily for its relationship to circulation — supporting healthy blood flow, including to the brain. Better circulation is relevant to alertness, mental clarity and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients that neurons need to function.
What the evidence actually shows
Trial results across the Ginkgo literature are mixed but lean supportive, particularly in older adults. It's one of the more thoroughly researched ingredients in this category, though not every study finds a measurable effect, and results vary by dose, formulation and population studied.
Why it's paired with the rest of the formula
Ginkgo addresses circulation specifically. It's combined with Bacopa Monnieri for memory retention and Lion's Mane for nerve growth factor support, since no single ingredient addresses every mechanism relevant to cognitive wellness.
Safety notes
Ginkgo can thin the blood, which is worth raising with your doctor before use — particularly if you take blood-thinning medication or have a procedure scheduled. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing without medical guidance.
